TNO: Resilient Ship Design Course | 18 – 21 April 2017, Rotterdam

Although warships have several layers of defence, history shows a multitude of incidents where these failed and resulted in a ship's severe battle damage. 

The ships design can provide an adequate level of resilience against anti-ship missiles, UNDEX threats, shaped charges, gunfire or asymmetric threats. You can learn all about it in this course organised by TNO Defence Research from The Netherlands.

PURPOSE
The main purpose of the course is to understand the basics of designing against modern above water and underwater threats. Participants will learn the principles of ship survivability, so that they are able to design themselves, to communicate with specialists, to tackle an underwater shock problem or to deal with above water threats. The knowledge can also be applied to upgrade ships for new threats.

Lockheed Martin Passed the Test: Q-53 Radar Demonstrates Counter-UAS Capability

The Lockheed Martin AN/TPQ-53 counter-fire radar recently demonstrated its ability to identify and track unmanned aerial systems and pass that information to a command and control node, a key capability as the battle-space rapidly becomes more crowded with emerging air threats.

"The demonstration showed that the Q-53 radar can provide soldiers in combat real time awareness of air threats," said Rick Herodes, Q-53 program director, Lockheed Martin. "The inherent flexibility of the Q-53's active electronically scanned array hardware architecture allows us to constantly evolve the Q-53's software to deal with emerging threats. This demonstration provided further verification that the Q-53 enables the war-fighter to stay ahead of changing global threats."

The demonstration was part of the U.S. Army's Maneuver and Fires Integration Experiment (MFIX) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The annual MFIX exercise brings together military, industry and academia to assess solutions to future war-fighting needs in a live environment.
In the demonstration, the Q-53 radar showed it can be readily adapted to provide both air surveillance and counter fire target acquisition in one tactical sensor.  The radar identified and tracked several unmanned aerial systems and provided data to Forward Area Air Defense Command and Control. Simultaneously, the Q-53 radar performed its original mission by providing accurate targeting data on rockets, artillery and mortars, providing a multi-mission radar capability.

The solid-state phased array radar system detects, classifies, tracks and determines the location of enemy indirect fire in 360 or 90-degree modes.

Lockheed Martin is manufacturing multiple Q-53 radars per month. Since Lockheed Martin won the development contract for the Q-53 radar in 2007, the company has won five additional contracts for a total of more than 100 radars and delivered more than 60 systems to the U.S. Army. The Army is expected to award a full-rate production contract this year bringing the system total to more than 170.

Work on the Q-53 radars is performed at Lockheed Martin facilities in Syracuse and Owego, New York, Moorestown, New Jersey, and Clearwater, Florida.

Qatar Orders Super Mushshak Trainer Aircraft from Pakistan


The State of Qatar has signed a contract for the purchase of “Super Mushshak” training aircraft from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported. 

The contract was signed for Qatar by HE Commander of Al Zaeem Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Attiyah Air College Brigadier (Pilot) Salem Hamad Al Nabet for Qatar, and for Pakistan by Deputy Chairman of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik. 
Brig. Al Nabet expressed pleasure for signing the contact, noting that the new aircraft will provide the support needed to train pilots candidates in the College and will give a great impetus in the development of the training process. 

He hailed the unlimited support which Al Zaeem Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Attiyah Air College enjoys from HH the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and the wise leadership. 

He also extended thanks to HE the Minister of State for Defense Affairs who pays all the attention for training and education in the armed forces and for preparing qualified cadres of Qatari pilots annually. 

The signing ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of Pakistan to Qatar Shahzad Ahmed and a number of senior officers of the Qatari Armed Forces. 

The PAC Super Mushshak (Proficient) is a more advanced, upgraded variant of the MFI-17 Mushshak basic trainer. It was designed by and is being manufactured at the Aircraft Manufacturing Factory, Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

Fitted with an American 260 hp engine, cockpit air conditioning, electrical instruments, and electric/manual elevator and rudder trim, the aircraft has been developed to meet FAR part 23 certification in normal, utility and aerobatics categories. It has a spacious side-by-side cockpit allowing good contact between the pilot and the co-pilot/observer or between the student and the instructor. 

The Super Mushshak meets the requirements of a modern primary training syllabus and is an ideal basic trainer for basic flight training and instrument flying.

ST Marine celebrates the Interim Delivery for the fourth patrol vessel RNOV Khassab

Singapore Technologies Marine Ltd (ST Marine), the marine arm of Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering), today held the Interim Acceptance ceremony for the Patrol Vessel (PV) RNOV Khassab. This is the final, in a series of four vessels, designed and built for the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO). The Guest-of-Honour was the Consul General for the Oman Consulate for the Republic of Singapore, HE Zakariya Hamed Hilal Al Saadi.

The contract for the design and build of the four Al-Ofouq class of PVs was awarded by the Ministry of Defence of the Sultanate of Oman in April 2012. It was the largest defence export contract in ST Engineering’s history. These four vessels will replace the Sultanate’s current four Seeb class PVs commissioned in the early 1980s.


A series of four patrol vessels designed and built by ST Marine for the Royal Navy of Oman, namely RNOV Al-Seeb, RNOV Shinas, RNOV Sadh and RNOV Khassab



The Al-Ofouq vessel is designed and built based on ST Marine’s proprietary 75m Fearless-class patrol vessel. Measuring 75m in length, breadth at 12.5m and displaces approximately 1,250 tonnes, the vessels can accommodate 60 crew and is equipped with a flight deck to support the operation of a medium lift-helicopter. Armed with modern weapons and sensors and equipped with a state of art combat management system, the PVs are most suited for a variety of maritime missions.

The Al-Ofouq vessels are named after various cities along the Oman coastal area. Al-Seeb is a coastal fishing city, located several kilometers northwest of Muscat, in the northeastern Oman; Shinas is a coastal town in northern Oman, Sadh is located in Salalah; and Khassab is a coastal city located in Musandam Governorate and overlooking the Strait of Hormuz.

The first PV, RNOV Al-Seeb has been successfully delivered.  The second, RNOV Shinas has completed her live firing trials in Oman last November 2015. The third, RNOV Sadh had arrived in Oman on 17 March 2016, and completed her live firing trials in April 2016. Both are currently preparing for hot-weather trials by 2Q2016.

Also, we hope that this project will be the milestone to extend the joint military cooperation with the friendly Republic of Singapore. I ask the Almighty Allah to grant success to the ship’s crew in the service of our beloved country.”

Attention Expeditionary Forces: Kalashnikov Group to Exhibit Vital Naval / Marine SOF Kit at Eurosatory 2016

Kalashnikov Group (subsidiary company of Rostec State Corporation) - formerly known as "Concern Kalashnikov' and "Izhmash" (Izevsk Machine Plant) before that - will participate in the International Defence Exhibition Eurosatory in north suburban Paris, 13-17 June 2016, stand number 198-C in Hall 6. 

 “Today, despite sanctions*, foreign customers are showing great interest in our products. They are interested both in small arms, and in our new product lines: unmanned aerial vehicles and assault boats for Special Forces units,” Kalashnikov Concern Chief Executive Alexey Krivoruchko said. “That’s why we consider the exhibition held in France and visited by delegates from more than 80 countries, to be one of the most appropriate sites to demonstrate products and hold negotiations with potential customers and business partners.” 


For the first time in its history, the Kalashnikov Group will demonstrate the 3-D virtual exposition of the most advanced present and future integrated combat systems for land, sea and air.

Kalashnikov booth is equipped with a multi-media simulator featuring 3-D models of weapon and other systems. These include: 

  • AIR - Unmanned aerial vehicles manufactured by ZALA AERO GROUP (Kalashnikov subsidiary); 
  • LAND - Small arms under “Kalashnikov” brand; and,
  • SEA - Multi-functional boats designed under the brand of "Rybinsk Shipyard” to be used by specialised agencies in the area of monitoring, surveillance and target designation. 

Each of these has a critical role in successful Maritime / Naval SOF missions.

The multi-media program built into the 3-D simulator will make it possible to demonstrate the technological potential on the screen and immerse viewers in virtual reality. Visitors will have an opportunity to pilot the:

  • BK-family of leading-edge assault boatsBK-10 and BK-16; and,  
  • ZALA-family of unmanned aerial vehicles / UAVs, ZALA 421-16E, ZALA 421-16EM, ZALA 421-08M.


The system allows the end-user can select any type of weather, landscape or environmental conditions. Visitors to Kalashnikov booth will have an opportunity to control the object through the touch panel and display the full range of combat characteristics.

The simulator features the most famous small arms to the most recent combat systems produced by Kalashnikov: 

  • Updated Dragunov sniper rifle (SVDK); 
  • Vityaz-SN submachine gun ; 
  • Upgrade kit for Kalashnikov Assault Rifle; and,
  • Prototype of Lebedev pistol. 


The Kalashnikov Group will moreover feature a 3-D training module for their most advanced models of the civilian weapons, popular with police, MOUT ops, and gendarmes: 

  • Saiga-12 ver.340 - 12-gauge shotgun  perfect for self-defense and practical shooting; and, 
  • Los 7-1 - the advanced carbine featuring a balanced operating system, and the hunting carbine;

* Commentary... The sanctions against Russian state-owned companies and financial institutions are becoming more unpopular across Europe as they are within Russia.  The increasingly out-of-favour sanctions against Russia reverse more than 20 years of progress between Russia and "The West."  

Critics of the sanctions point out that "The West" continues to koutou to Beijing and trade openly and freely with the PRC, while it is aggressively: 
...hegemonic on several fronts (including financial markets); 
...continues its development projects that are environmentally damaging to (irreversible) and stripping of natural assets in Africa, Latin America and the South Pacific (threatening ASEAN member states); 
...maintains brutality in Tibet; and, 
...carries on an ever-widening path of basic human rights abuse from Hong Kong to Harbin.

Supreme Sovereignty

SINGAPORE TECHNOLOGIES announced by press release, the launch of Littoral Mission
Vessel (LMV) "Sovereignty" commemorated another significant milestone for the LMV Programme on 16 April 2016.


Being the second of the eighth locally-designed and built vessels in ST Marine, Sovereignty was launched by the Lady Sponsor, Mrs Teo Chee Hean - the wife of Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Coordinating Minister for National Security after the naming proclamation and naval traditional breaking a bottle of champagne across the ship's bow.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Guest-of-Honour, DPM Teo Chee Hean addressed the significance of the name Sovereignty having a long and distinguished history in the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), protecting Singapore’s territorial integrity, waters and sea lines of communication.

The launch and naming ceremony was attended by other distinguished guests, including:  Dr Ng Eng Hen (Minister for Defence), Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman (Senior Minister of State for Defence and Foreign Affairs), Rear-Admiral Lai Chung Han (Chief of Navy, Singapore).

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK UK TO DEMONSTRATE ITS AUTONOMOUS MINE HUNTING MISSION CAPABILITIES AT UNMANNED WARRIOR 2016 (UMW16).

ATLAS ELEKTRONIK UK (AEUK) will present its unmanned mine hunting mission system, ARCIMS, at the Royal Navy’s high tempo Unmanned Warrior demonstration in October 2016.

Unmanned Warrior is an opportunity for UK companies to showcase their maritime autonomous systems in a tactically relevant domain to the Royal Navy. “It’s the perfect environment for us to demonstrate our naval mine countermeasures capabilities”, says Head of Surface Ships division at AEUK, James Young. “ARCIMS has proven USV capabilities, with two contracts received from international navies in 2015.

Due to this increase in demand, we are ramping up our production capacity, and are currently fitting out the sixth ARCIMS at our dedicated Integration Facilities at Winfrith in Dorset.”

Previous contracts include:
• A portable influence mine sweeping capability for the Royal Navy which is also deployable from the Royal Navy HUNT class mine countermeasures vessel (MCMV)
• An ARCIMS USV supplied to WTD71 in Germany to evaluate unmanned systems technologies for MCM
• RNMB Hazard used by the Royal Navy Maritime Autonomous Systems Trials Team (MASTT)
• Two portable Minesweeping Mission Systems supplied to a Middle East Navy.
As a systems integrator, AEUK works with partners to provide world leading autonomous mission systems. 

Currently, ARCIMS is being integrated with the Northrop Grumman Corporation AQS-24B
Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS). It is the only operationally proven, high speed towed mine hunting system in the world that can be deployed from airborne and surface platforms. ARCIMS which is 11 metres in length has a large open deck space, four tonne payload capacity and high tow performance across a wide speed range, making integration easy.
Integration testing of ARCIMS and AQS-24B, including remote launch and recovery of the towed sonar will take place at the AEUK Bincleaves waterside facilities at Portland Harbour during September 2016.

ARCIMS is reconfigurable with modular payloads for MCM, Hydrography, Coastal ASW, Maritime Security and Force Protection. The ARCIMS USV can operate remotely, autonomously or as a manned vessel. Designed for military applications with a shock resistant hull and a low underwater radiated signature, the twin hull and twin jet propulsion gives high manoeuvrability, good stability and a top speed of over 40 knots.

ARCIMS will be available for further customer demonstration and purchase after UMW16. Furthermore, AEUK is awaiting imminent overseas contracts for ARCIMS, making the Company a true global leader in the supply of military autonomous mission systems.

Successful CANTO® 130 mm anti-torpedo decoy sea trials from C-Guard

Successful sea trials occured for C-Guard and CANTO130mm anti-torpedo decoy 
on 12 May 2016. Chemring Countermeasures, DCNS, and Terma conducted joint operation trials of their Torpedo Defence Solution. This solution integrates Terma’s C-Guard Decoy Launching System* with DCNS’ CANTO® Torpedo Decoy and the Chemring Launch Module.

The main purpose of the trials was to confirm the live operation of the CANTO 130 mm decoy in its purpose to lure incoming torpedoes from their original target; the ship launching the decoy. Additionally, the trials aimed to prove the performance of the Chemring launch module and the Terma C-Guard ability to launch the decoy.

Once the CANTO 130 mm decoy is launched from C-Guard and enters the water it starts
generating numerous acoustic signals which mask the noise from the ship and generate copious false targets, hence diluting/confusing the homing ability of the incoming torpedo. By deploying CANTO decoys correctly with associated evasive maneuvers, the ship is able to steer away from the torpedo target zone to safety while the torpedo, homing on the false targets presented by the decoy, eventually dissipates all its energy or fuel.


The trials, facilitated by The Royal Danish Navy (RDN) and The Danish Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), were performed from the Danish Frigate HDMS IVER HUITFELDT off the coast of Northern Zealand, Denmark.

According to René d’Ambrières, DCNS Underwater Weapons Business Unit Director, the trial results came out very successful: “All expectations set before the trials were fulfilled and DCNS, Chemring and Terma are all very satisfied to confirm their capacity to develop cutting-edge anti-torpedo warfare capabilities, including the design and production of the countermeasure, sea-proven on board naval platforms, which is a real asset in the naval market worldwide.”

As a result of the successful trial, C-Guard is now the first and currently the only Decoy Launching System fully integrated with the CANTO 130 mm anti-torpedo functionality hence fully qualified to deploy CANTO 130 mm decoys.

As a consequence of the successful trials Terma Vice President, CCS Sales, Thomas Leistiko states: “The future perspective for Terma and DCNS is to strengthen the joint venture of C-Guard and CANTO 130 mm and promoting a state-of-the-art torpedo defence solution for the present and emerging requirements for torpedo self-protection systems for naval units across the world.”
