French contractors ambitions for DIMDEX 2014

Assembled under the French banner, nine entities: DCI, DCNS, DIGINEXT, ECA, EURONAVAL, GICAN, LACROIX, NEXTER and OCEA, will make their way to Doha from 25 to 27 March 2014, for the 4th edition of trade exhibition DIMDEX; Thales, Rafale International and NH Industries are also present with their own display areas, confirming the importance of the Qatari event.

Despite strong international competition, these French contractors are hoping for a large slice of Qatar's projected 20 billion euros of armament and security acquisitions. This shopping list includes, for the sole naval and air/sea sectors — the centrepiece of the DIMDEX exhibition — frigates, corvettes and patrol boats, helicopters of various types, naval combat systems and surface-to-air missiles, all technological sectors where the operational performance of French products is acknowledged.

In addition, the excellent Franco-Qatari relationship provides a good political underpinning to the French bids, as demonstrated by the high-level bilateral committee meeting held on 20 March 2014, chaired by the French minister of defence Jean-Yves Le Drian and his Qatari opposite number, General Hamad Al Attiyah.

More generally, the Qatari exhibition DIMDEX offers the French naval defence and security sector a chance to gain new market shares in a context of sharply increased demand throughout the Middle East.

French naval industries trade group GICAN, which will be running the French pavilion at DIMDEX, will also have an excellent opportunity to promote its own exhibition, EURONAVAL, the oldest and most important international show of defence and naval security procurement, created in 1968, whose 24th edition will be held in Paris from 27 to 31 October of this year.
